(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh de city wake up one morning to a strange noise. Truck a groan like old man knee, spade a kiss drain that ain’t get attention since Burnham era, broom bristle like dem serious this time.
Official stand up serious-serious by pile of thing that been living there so long it shoulda been paying rent. Is a Clean-Up Campaign, dem seh. Not small clean-up eh—full costume drama: reflective vest, tight face, and sudden love for de city.
And watch miracle nah. De campaign ain’t get lost. It ain’t take wrong turn in Albouystown. It ain’t sit down in South Ruimveldt to meditate on life. No sah. It march straight, like soldier who get good instruction, right into Tiger Bay and Kingston.
At which point, dem boys seh, plenty people clap dem forehead and seh, “Ahhh… so da why.”
For years now, Tiger Bay and Kingston been existing in that special government category: “we see you, but don’t see you.” Road get personality. Drain start planting its own crops. Garbage settle down so long it apply for permanent residence. And government pass every day like dem blind in one eye and squinting in the next.
So dem boys ask: what change?
Certainly not de people. Dem been there, sweating and surviving all along. And we know by now people well-being does not move machinery that fast. No sah. This clean-up come with compass, binoculars, and a good clear line of sight.
Amazing how conscience does sharpen when certain things might be seen.
We hearing this about pride, order, love for city. And maybe is true. Just like maybe is coincidence that dem areas sit nicely between old Georgetown and some newer dreams that prefer clean scenery with dem morning coffee.
Don’t get dem boys wrong—the clean-up welcome. Tiger Bay and Kingston deserve clean street, proper drain, and respect. Just funny how dem deserve it now and not all them years before.
So leh we not confuse charity with housekeeping. This is cleaning when company coming.
Open yuh eye, Guyana. Enjoy de broom, de truck, de sudden hug. But remember: when cleaning selective, it ain’t dirt government shame of—it embarrassment.
Because everybody know: yuh don’t clean house for de children who live there.
Yuh clean it for the guests who coming to look.
Talk half. Leff half.
