(Kaieteur News) – Several air soft guns and a 12-gauge shotgun were seized on Tuesday by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Sophia, Greater Georgetown, and Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Police in a statement on Thursday detailed that the owner of a private security firm and three on-duty security guards were arrested during the operation. At a supermarket in Sophia, a 31-year-old security guard of Sophia was found in possession of an airsoft rifle. Police said a search was conducted, but the guard was unable to produce a permit for the weapon.
At another location, a shopping mall in Sophia, a 34-year-old security guard of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, was found armed with a 12-gauge shotgun containing two live cartridges. Checks revealed that the serial number on the weapon was filed off, and no licence or precept was produced.
Further searches at a third location resulted in the discovery of an airsoft rifle in the vicinity of a guard hut at a supermarket in Lusignan. Police stated that the security guard on duty, a 38-year-old man of Cummings Park, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, told police that the firearm was issued to him at the start of his tour of duty.
Subsequent enquiries led police to the supervisor and owner of the security service, a 40-year-old man of Industry, East Coast Demerara. Police search conducted on his motor vehicle revealed five airsoft firearms, three airsoft pistols and two airsoft rifles. Police said he was unable to produce permits or licences for the weapons. In total, eight firearms were recovered along with two rounds of ammunition. All items were processed and lodged as evidence, and the suspects were taken into police custody as investigations continue.
