(Kaieteur News) – The Amerindian community of Karasabai in Region Nine will soon benefit from a $993 million airstrip, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill disclosed during a visit to the community on Wednesday.
Edghill was joined by a technical team which included Head of the Special Projects Unit (SPU) Colin Gittens, during an engagement with the residents and the village council on the works which will begin on the current airstrip from January 19.
Kaieteur News understands that the $993 million airstrip when completed will have a length of 3000ft by 50ft, with a strength of 5000 SPI and eight inches thick rigid paved concrete.
The Public Works Ministry detailed that the airstrip will also be outfitted with 50 navigational lights to accommodate night operations if necessary. The rehabilitated airstrip will also be painted in accordance with international standards and outfitted with a parking space to accommodate five aircraft.
The ministry informed that the project takes on a community participation model, and will see 50 persons, both skilled and unskilled, executing the works that have an estimated 75-day duration.
The residents of the village and their leaders were introduced to the members of the ministry’s team that will be executing the works.
“Minister Edghill also announced, the company that will be supplying concrete for the project, International Import and Supplies, will also be gifting the village a terminal like that which is will be constructed in Aishalton,” the ministry stated.
Further, to ensure accessibility at all times in the event of an emergency, the ministry announced that immediate road works will commence from January 15, to ensure the road to Lethem is at a satisfactory level.
The road works will be done to ensure that the commute to and from the airstrip in Lethem is not fatiguing for the residents.
At the start of 2026, President Irfaan Ali has commissioned the $799 million upgraded Paramakatoi Airstrip in Region Eight, and the $920 million airstrip at Aishalton, Region Nine.
At the commissioning ceremony at Aishalton, the President disclosed that Expressions of Interest will soon be issued for the construction of a modern airport at Lethem, as well as 35 additional airstrips for the hinterland.
