(Kaieteur News) – Five months after a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony for the country’s first Day and Night Care Facility at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, the $94 million structure serves no purpose beyond its glittering paint and shiny fence, now overtaken by vegetation.
Highlighting the condition of the building and questioning the massive cost of the facility was Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party, Azruddin Mohamed.
The leader in a visit to the site this week argued that the project was no more than an election gimmick, designed to trick voters, appearing in headlines on August 8, 2025, days before the September 1, 2025 elections but quietly abandoned after votes were counted.
During the commissioning ceremony, President Irfaan Ali cited the importance of the facility, stating that it would transform their lives by allowing more individuals the opportunity to join the work force. “Today’s initiative is about empowerment. Giving parents who never had the opportunity to explore the professional possibility, adding to the disposable income to have that empowerment to do that,” Ali explained.
Though the building was intended to provide 24-hour care to children in a safe and supportive environment, there was no indication on when this would materialise. The facility did not open immediately to the public, following the ribbon-cutting while a report from the Department of Public Information (DPI) was mute on when it would be operationalised.
As such, five months later, the facility has not registered a child, as mothers continue to seek help elsewhere. To this end, Mohamed said the building was “just concrete, paint, overgrown bushes, and broken promises.”
He pointed out, “Millions of taxpayers’ dollars were spent, flurry speeches were made, and a lavish ribbon-cutting ceremony was witnessed. Today, the building sits locked, unused, and already deteriorating. This is not development. This is a waste of public money.”
In addition to serving no purpose to the nation, Mohamed went on to note that the cost of the facility is inexplicable. According to him, “It is impossible for a single-story building like that to cost $94 million. Anyone who owns a few buildings or has basic knowledge of construction knows that. So, the question is, where did the money go?”
He believes that the administration is focused on profiting from such developments as he went on to question whether the building would ever serve its purpose.
WIN called on the Region Three Chairman, Inshan Ayub, to clear the compound and requested the President to redirect his attention from the Mohamed family to the cleaning and operationalising of the facility.
Efforts to contact the Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud were unsuccessful.
