(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works announced Tuesday that phase two of the Thomas Lands Rehabilitation Project which stretches from Vlissingen Road to Albert Street, Georgetown is completed and opened for use.
“Traffic will flow once again between Vlissingen Road and Albert Street, along the major artery. This isn’t just a new coat of asphalt—it’s a total upgrade featuring widened lanes and a dedicated pedestrian walkway,” the ministry said in a Facebook post.
An engineer from the ministry, speaking about the project, stated that the stretch of road was expected to be completed by November 24, but the contractor, JKP Construction, was given a two-month extension to complete the work.

Phase Two of Thomas Lands Rehabilitation Project which stretches from Vlissingen Road to Albert Street.
“This road was supposed to be completed on November 24 however, due to delays of materials that have to be imported and inclement weather conditions, the contractor got a two months extension. That two months extension led into January 24,” he explained.
He shared that as works are completed on this phase, the contractor is in the process of completing some 120 meters of road which stretches from around the YMCA area to Camp Street.
“The contractor has started there already. He’s currently constructing dam to start building the MSE (Mechanically Stabilised Earth) wall and at the same time, we will be looking to actually upgrade the road,” he noted.
According to the engineer, in a “few weeks’ time”, the entire stretch of Thomas land will be up and completely finished for use.
The Department of Public Information in January last year reported that works on phase two will cost approximately $813 million and that the road was being upgraded to asphaltic concrete and will also use the geocell construction material. The geocell is said to be a three-dimensional cellular structure that is used to stabilise soil, prevent erosion and support heavy loads. Included along the roadway is a pedestrian walkway.
Phase one of the project was done by JKP for some $397.6 million, covering from Albert Street to Camp Street. However, following the works, there were reports the road was sinking on the western section, closer to the National Park, causing a major traffic hazard for commuters.
Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill had explained that the developed thoroughfare will be capable of accommodating all categories of vehicles.
