Kaieteur Sports – Defending Blaze T20 Champs Guyana, pulled off a gutsy 7-run win yesterday over an experienced Windward Islands unit, when action in the opening round of this year’s tournament bowled off at the Arno Vale Playing Field Ground, St. Vincent.
After posting a meager 96-5 after their 20 overs expired, Guyana would go on to keep the Windwards to 89-5 by the time their 20 over allotment came to an end. West Indies player Shabika Gajnabi carried her team through a tough batting innings, leading with a solid 38 off 37 with just 2 fours.
Support came from Windies U19 spinner Ashmini Munisar who scored 17 not out (1×4) and continues to grow as a capable lower-order batter, especially in the time of crisis for her team. Only opener Mandy Mangru (16) got going as she struck a solitary four before being dismissed.
Medium-pacer Jannillea Glasgow (1-10), left-arm spinners Afy Fletcher (1-20) and skipper Zaida James (1-14) were among five bowlers to return a wicket apiece for the Windwards. Replying to a gettable target never worked out for Windwards, who were restricted from getting to their target, despite heroics from Glasgow and Fletcher.
The opener Glasgow hit 41 with 4 fours before being run-out, a dismissal which turned the game around for Guyana. The veteran Fletcher, meanwhile, led a brief fight-back with 33 off 36 balls, smacking the only 6 in her team’s innings to go along with a single four.
However, the combined class of last year’s Blaze star of the tournament, spinner Plaffiana Millington who grabbed 1-13 from her 4 overs, along with Munisar returning to claim 1-24 with medium-pacer Sheneta Grimmond chipping in with 1-14; the Windwards found themselves contained the entire match thanks to some disciplined bowling from the Guyanese.
Guyana will now turn their attention to the Leeward Islands, their next opponents in Thursday’s Second Round in a match which will be played under lights from 19:00h. (Clifton Ross)
