Kaieteur Sports – A brilliant all-round bowling effort from the Leewards helped them sneak past Jamaica by 9-runs yesterday as part of Round 1’s action in Arnos Vale Ground.
A composed Leewards did a fair job in getting to 108-5 from 20 overs, thanks to opener Shawnisha Hector stroking 56 off 55 deliveries (6×4) which helped set the tone for her team.
Skipper Amanda Edwards chipped in with 20 (3×4), as none of the other batters got going for the Leewards.
Jamaica had a reasonable bowling innings, led by veterans Chedean Nation (2-15), Stefanie Taylor (1-24) and Neisha-Ann Waisome (1-21) leading the bowling.
After losing her partner Rashad Williams (4), opener Nation then returned with the bat to help guide the Jamaicans home with little resistance from the Islanders.
Taylor lent ideal support with a breezy 25 which featured just three fours, before Jamaica somewhat collapsed despite being in range of victory.
Leewards had a brilliant bowling comeback which was led by the experienced operators in Hector (2-15), Jahzara Claxton (2-26), Davronique Maynard (2-19), Qiana Joseph (1-17) and Edwards (1-11).
In the end, Jamaica were kept to 99-8 when their overs expired thanks mainly to some brilliant spells bowled by the Leeward ladies. (C. Ross)
