– With inaugural Tertiary Football Tournament set for January kickoff
Kaieteur Sports – Building on what it calls “most remarkable year” in its history, the Petra Organisation has launched a comprehensive 2026 football calendar, promising an unprecedented year of youth development. The headline addition is the inaugural Tertiary/University Football Tournament, a long-discussed initiative aimed at narrowing the gap between secondary school and senior football.
Directors Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole announced the schedule, positioning the new tertiary competition, slated for a late January kickoff, to the top of the 2026 agenda. This tournament aligns well with Petra’s inclusivity drive, introducing another layer to grassroots development, and perhaps the solution to cultivating larger portions of Guyana’s football talent.
“This tournament has the potential to bridge a critical gap,” said Mendonca. “With football’s growth in recent years, the tertiary level is the logical next step in our development pathway.”
The 2026 slate maintains Petra’s signature focus on school-aged athletes while expanding its reach. According to the release, the action resumes in March with the 11th Annual Massy U18 Secondary Schools Round Robin Championship (March 15–April 19), followed by ExxonMobil’s 11th Annual Boys’ and Girls’ U14 tournaments (May 2–June 20), widely regarded as the breeding ground for emerging talent.
The summer features the ninth Digicel Secondary Schools Football Championship (tentatively July 4–August 15), offering another major platform for skill enhancement and added play-time.
The Petra Organisation is driven by youth, after the vocational period, they will then shift focus to the Primary level, hosting the 13th Annual Courts Pee wee U11 Boys’ tournament from September 12.
The competitive climax for secondary schools will be the Republic Bank U18 League (October 18–November 29), now in its seventh edition, which will crown the nation’s top two teams in school’s football, providing them with a chance to represent Guyana in the yearend intivitation Series.
Meanwhile, another exciting layer to the calendar’s diversity is the MVP Sports Girls’ U11 Football tournament, the event will shift the spotlight on the female aspect of development, introducing the next generation of female footballers from November 14 to December 5.
After that, Petra plans to close the year with the prestigious KFC International Goodwill Series in December. Organisers hint at an expanded international field, with invitations expected for teams deeper into the Caribbean diaspora.
“Our commitment is to create opportunities for every player across the ten administrative regions,” stated Cole. “We’re building a standard all can enjoy and nurturing young players on their journey to elite levels.”
With tournaments running from January through December, the 2026 calendar reaffirms Petra Organisation’s role as the primary architect of grassroots football in Guyana, aiming to deliver another year of skill development and competitive opportunity for the nation’s youth.

2026 to see eight tournaments with increased focus to expand the KFC invitational Series and the inclusion of the inaugural University Championship.
