Dear Editor,
In light of my previous correspondence regarding the serious failures within our nation’s healthcare system, I am compelled to highlight new, alarming incidents that further underscore the systemic issues plaguing our healthcare facilities (https://kaieteurnewsonline.com/2025/11/29/guyanas-healthcare-system/).
The tragic cases of Nerissa Chetram and Euronica Andrews, who suffered devastating losses due to inadequate care, demonstrate that our healthcare system continues to fail patients. Nerissa, a high-risk patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital, endured twelve hours of labour that culminated in the loss of both her baby and womb on November 8th, 2025, an outcome that may have been avoided with timely intervention such as a caesarean section. Furthermore, on December 12th, 2025, Euronica Andrews lost her sixteen-year-old daughter, Onessia, after her desperate pleas for better care went unanswered at both the Enmore Regional Hospital and the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Regrettably, these are not isolated incidents. Evidence continues to mount as on January 1st, 2026, a thirty-year-old man at the Bartica Regional Hospital, suffering from a severed vein, was left without proper treatment for over an hour due to the inexperience of medical staff. Additionally, on January 3rd, 2026, a TikToker, @trishbassant, reported her inability to obtain medical care for her daughter at the Diamond Regional Hospital. These cases illustrate a concerning pattern of neglect in our healthcare system.
In response to my previous letter, the Minister promised to conduct clinical audits and to ensure enhanced adherence to medical guidelines (https://www.stabroeknews.com/2025/12/30/news/guyana/improved-adherence-to-medical-guidelines-urgently-needed-anthony/). It is clear that these efforts have yet to yield significant improvements. More effort is needed. It is imperative that the Minister treat this ongoing crisis as a matter of utmost urgency. Therefore, I call on the Minister to establish a dedicated task force aimed at implementing immediate, actionable changes to improve patient care nationwide.
The Minister needs to understand that our citizens deserve a healthcare system that prioritises their safety and that he will be held accountable for continuous failures. It is essential that we address these issues head-on to prevent further loss of life and suffering in our communities.
Sincerely,
Terrence Campbell, M.P.
