(Kaieteur News) – Former President Donald Ramotar has warned that the recent United States military operation in Caracas, Venezuela will place the world in a very much more dangerous position, as countries may now take additional precautions, wondering if they could be next.
Speaking during an episode of Caribbean Tea, the former head-of-state pointed to countries such as Iran and North Korea, which he believes may now be on heightened alert following the U.S. operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores who were transported to the U.S and placed before the court for narco-terrorism charges.
He said this would occur, “instead of trying to move towards the reduction and create a safer world many countries will now be thinking how do I protect myself from bigger countries who would like to bully me.”
Ramotar described the incident as tragic and warned that the world is heading back to a stage where “might is right” and where “the law of the jungle and where sovereignty is becoming meaningless as international laws are being destroyed and all international law and international institutions are being disregarded and undermined.”
He believes the January 3 operation in Venezuela by the U.S military is a continuation of what has been unfolding for some time, as the U.S, in an effort to restore some of its lost position in trade and other areas of international life, has resorted to brute force to reinstate itself as the number one power in the world. “They want to displace China from the Caribbean. They want to replace everybody else in the Middle East. That’s why they were supporting the genocide in Gaza and they continue to support it right now, as the ethnic cleansing continues in the West Bank, in Palestine and in other areas too we see them, their idea is to get rid of any type of competition and to own as much of the world as they possibly can,” Ramotar noted.
According to the former Guyanese leader, Latin America and the Caribbean, because of their geographical proximity, are now easy targets for the U.S, and Venezuela, he said, “is a big victim in this regard.”
Following the military operation, President Donald Trump at a press conference disclosed plans for the U.S. to “run” Venezuela until, “we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.” He also disclosed America’s ambitious plans for the oil-rich nation resources. Moreover, in response to criticism of his initial social media post following the operation, Ramotar said, “I think people are mixing up our problems with Venezuela on the border issue and on this much more, much more dangerous situation that has developed within the world for that matter. Because I don’t know if anybody isn’t thinking that any country now, whatever resources they have, will try to get if they are serious about their sovereignty and their independence, will have to try to find ways and means where they can protect themselves.”
He added that there is no other way countries can protect themselves against “big powers” unless they acquire nuclear weapons. He said this could lead many heads of government to begin thinking in that direction, resulting in the proliferation of dangerous weapons worldwide. Citing Einstein, the former president said, “You can’t prepare for war and expect to have peace and it’s making the world a far more dangerous place for all of us because we all know that if a nuclear war ever breaks out that’s the end of all of us whether we have it or not.”
