(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar on Friday commissioned four new water supply systems at several villages in the South Pakaraimas, Region Nine.
The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) on Saturday said that the projects which value $102 million collectively benefit some 1,865 residents. The company said that the residents are benefitting from “near-universal access to potable water.”
Karasabai Village, along with its satellite settlements of Jawari, Wichabai, and Curicock are beneficiaries of the water systems. GWI stated that these villages have long faced the challenge of uneven water distribution and before these interventions; families had to rely entirely on rainwater harvesting and open surface sources.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar alongside his team and residents cutting the ribbon to the water supply system at Curicock Village, Region Nine.
“Within Karasabai itself, two new 150mm PVC wells were drilled in Section 2 and the Airstrip View area at a cost of approximately $36 million. These facilities, powered by independent photovoltaic systems and protected by secure perimeter fencing, now serve 127 households. In the three satellite villages, similar wells were drilled and distribution lines installed,” GWI reported.
Minister Indar at the commissioning said that the investments in the water systems are a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring that no village is left behind in its quest to bridge the gap in water access between the coast and the hinterland.
The minister also acknowledged those local labourers were used to bring the projects to fruition. “We are bringing the people in the community to be part of the execution of the development… they are paid, they learn a skill, and they become skillful to move that skill to other areas,” he said.
The minister noted also that the projects form part of some $30.4 billion the government spent since assuming office on the water sector in the region.
