(Kaieteur News) – Forty-five-year-old Deonarine Dookhoo, was on Tuesday sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of his mother.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Berbice High Court. The convicted man was charged for killing his 64-year-old mother Teshwattie Jaglall back in 2021.
Dookhoo, also known as Dinesh, was found guilty of the crime by a 12-member jury last December.
At the commencement of his trial, he had pleaded not guilty, and was remanded to prison.
The court heard that the man and his two children lived with his mother at Number Three Village, West Coast Berbice. He was employed as a security guard, and was reportedly an alcoholic. The court was told that Dookhoo would occasionally beat Jaglall when he needed money to purchase rum, but was always denied.
He reportedly attacked his mother with a cutlass between June 30 and July 1, 2021, after she had condemned his drinking habits. He dealt her several chops about her body and left her on the floor bloodied.
The man then strangely prepared himself for work and did not bother to remove his mother’s body.
Jaglall was discovered by her six-year-old granddaughter.
Her body was removed and escorted to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
