(Kaieteur News) – Leaders of the political opposition have taken the PPP/C government to task, committing to hold the administration accountable, and ensuring all citizens lead quality lives.
With over 11.6 billion barrels of oil in the Stabroek Block alone, Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Chairman of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton in his New Year’s message has underscored that too many Guyanese remain impoverished.
“Guyanese should have been easily looking forward to a happy new year. Unfortunately, the resources from oil are not meeting a large percentage of the people of Guyana, more than 50 per cent of the Guyanese people live in poverty. This is unacceptable and unfortunate in an oil rich Guyana. This must change,” Norton said.

He argued that a majority of the population is not feeling the impact of the country’s petroleum wealth and called on the government to reallocate Guyana’s oil resources in 2026 to ensure broader benefits for citizens.
Norton underscored that the new year presents an opportunity to shift how oil revenues are distributed, contending that current allocations favour a small segment of the population.
“2026 offers us the opportunity to reallocate the resources from oil in a way that the people of Guyana benefit. In this regard, the government should change the pattern of allocation of resources from benefiting the few and making the rich richer and the poor poorer,” he stated.
Norton said equitable distribution of oil revenues is achievable if there is sufficient political will, and stressed that all Guyanese should benefit from the country’s natural resources.
“The time is nigh when we must ensure that all Guyanese share in our God given wealth, if there is the political will to put people first, then this is easily accomplished,” he said.
Further, Norton outlined the role of the opposition going forward, saying it would continue to highlight governance failures.
“The PNCR/ APNU wishes to urge the government to become people centered and put the people of Guyana first in 2026 it is the task of the opposition to continue exposing corruption, mismanagement, wastage and incompetence, with the aim of ensuring the resources of this society benefit the people of Guyana in 2026…” Norton said.
He further encouraged citizens to be vocal on issues affecting their lives and standards of living, linking quality of life to democracy and the country’s oil wealth.
“All Guyanese must realise a path forward to a quality of life synonymous with democracy and reflect the tremendous oil wealth we possess. We wish to encourage all Guyanese to become advocates regarding issues that affect their lives and livelihood. If it is harmful to your peaceful existence or contrary to law, speak up, speak out…,” Norton added.
Moreover, leader of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and Member of Parliament (MP) Azruddin Mohamed in his own New Year’s message said that the party will continue to serve as a voice for the voiceless. “We will continue to hold the government accountable in our call for transparency and justice, we will scrutinise public spending, we will highlight corruption wherever it exists and we will continue to stand on the side of the people of Guyana…” he noted.
Additionally, Mohamed stated, “Though we launched only three months before the election the people of Guyana stood with us, together we made history with 16 parliamentary seats WIN emerged as a strong and credible force and the main opposition party…”
