(Kaieteur News) – A minibus driver was nabbed on Tuesday after police discovered a quantity of alcohol in the vehicle transporting school-aged passengers, whom he allegedly supplied with the beverages.
According to a statement issued by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Wednesday, ranks conducting a traffic enforcement exercise on the eastern side of the Lima Public Road, Essequibo Coast, observed the minibus parked along the roadway.
Police said that upon approaching the vehicle, ranks observed, “20 school-aged passengers inside. Upon approaching the vehicle, ranks observed what appeared to be alcoholic beverages within the bus.”
The driver was subsequently instructed to proceed to the Anna Regina Police Station, where the vehicle was searched in the presence of the authorities. During the search, several bottles containing alcoholic beverages, along with other items, were discovered.
The students were later handed over to a child care officer for further intervention.
Meanwhile, the driver was arrested and remains in custody. The minibus has been lodged, and investigations are ongoing.
