(Kaieteur News) – Police in Region Six have confirmed that charges have been laid against the three men who were arrested this week for the robbery and murder committed on Chen Yongping on December 22, 2025.
Pieter Baker, a 29-year-old Guyanese male of mixed ancestry, a pump operator, of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice, and Colwin “Screech” Morris, a 29-year-old Guyanese male of mixed ancestry, labourer of New Street, Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice, were arrested last Tuesday by the police.
A 17-year-old male of mixed ancestry, who is a labourer of Burn Bush Dam, East Canje, Berbice, was also arrested.
The three suspects were charged Friday, for the offence of murder in the furtherance of a robbery committed on Yongping at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.
The accused appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court, where the charge was read to them, to which they were not required to plead. Consequently, Baker and Morris were remanded to prison, while the teen was remanded to the juvenile holding centre.
The matter was adjourned to January 14, 2026.
On December 24, between 09:00 hrs. of and 09:30 hrs., government pathologist, Dr. V. Brijmohan conducted a post-mortem examination with dissection on the body of Chen Yongping at Bailey’s Funeral Home. The cause of death was reported as shock and hemorrhage due to multiple stab wounds.
The body was identified by the deceased’s wife, Wu Xiao Fen, and witnessed by police.
The body was subsequently handed over to the relatives.
