President Ali doesn’t understand how upset people are about the cash grant

Dear Editor,

Listening to President Ali’s speech about his 5-year plan, as if he was making Dr. Ashni Singh’s budget presentation, it is clear that he still does not get that poverty is real and that all Guyanese are disappointed that he has not kept his cash grant promise for Christmas, the way he did not keep his promise to renegotiate the bad oil contract that robs us of billions every year.

The phenomenal rise of WIN, securing 25% of the votes, can be attributed to the fact despite the fact that the government made phenomenal progress in buildings and infrastructure. People feel equal attention was not paid to bread-and-butter issues.

The working poor is still catching hell while the contractor-class and business oligarchy wallow in wealth due to lucrative income from contracts. You wonder who is advising the President to give a speech at this time that did not announce the payment of the cash grant. People feel they were lied to. The non-payment of the cash grant is on everyone’s lips.

Some say all the people of Guyana must pay the price, sacrificing their cash grant which is their national patrimony, to enable the PPP’s agenda of delaying the election of their former friend and now political rival as Leader of the Opposition. To pay the cash grant, there has to be a meeting of Parliament to approve it, but if they call a session of parliament now, it will look bad if the Speaker does not call a meeting for the Opposition parties to elect the Leader of the Opposition.

The strategy seems to be – delay as long as you can hoping the rival can be extradited to the custody of the USA and not getting appointed as Leader of the Opposition. So, no meeting of Parliament means no cash grant possible. So, we all have to pay the price to support the PPP’s apparent ploy of delaying the election of the Opposition Leader. The President in his speech said the Guyanese people come first, but this is not so. If the interest of the Guyanese people comes first, they should have called Parliament to approve payment of the cash grant.

Force feeding us his great vision a week before Christmas, you would think the president is still on the campaign trail. People are pre-occupied with Christmas preparations and the president is giving a campaign speech as if that will put food on the table. He talked much about Artificial Intelligence but what we got was an Artificial Cash Grant. The government looks like bad Santa and Mr. Scrooge. WIN will capitalize on the frustrations of the working poor.
