First Government Service Centre opens at West Central Mall

(Kaieteur News) – The first Government Service Centre was officially opened on Friday at the West Central Mall, Leonora, West Coast of Demerara, marking the launch of a one-stop location for residents to access government services instead of travelling to its main branches.

Residents in the region can now apply for passports, process birth and death certificates, obtain marriage licences, access full services from the Guyana Revenue Authority, and register for the National Electronic Identification (E-ID). The centre also allows residents to apply online in advance, reducing waiting times when they arrive.

The facility will operate from Monday to Friday between 08:00hrs and 17:00hrs, with similar centres expected to be rolled out in other regions.

President Irfaan Ali, who attended the opening, highlighted the rapid response from residents and the efficiency of the new system. “Can you imagine that? Thirty-five applications in the last 24 hours. About 10 minutes each, and they’re already getting that certificate today. This would have been weeks sometimes, days of running, weeks of running,” the President said. He added that the same efficiency was seen at the passport office, noting that processing takes as little as five minutes per person, and urged that the high standards of service be maintained.

President Ali also disclosed that 20 national ID cards were processed on the first day and emphasized the expedited renewal process for provisional and driver’s licences. “We’re doing an expedited process for the driver’s licence, so that will take about a maximum of three days if they come to do their licence here,” he said. He further announced that, in the near future, all taxes will be filed online ahead of the upcoming tax season, while the Ministry of Finance works to integrate all Guyana Revenue Services at the centre.

Meanwhile, prior to its opening, residents welcomed the center and were engaged in its services, the centre recorded significant results, with four driver’s licences issued during the week and revenues already banked. Looking ahead, President Ali announced that similar Government Service Centres will be established in Regions Two, Five, Six, Ten and Nine within the first quarter of 2026, “So that people can enjoy a better quality of life, quality of service.”
