Kaieteur News – Fire destroyed a supermarket and a nearby building at Parika, East Bank Essequibo Wednesday night.
There were reports of individuals trying to loot stores during the tragedy.
Among the buildings was the Golden House Chinese Supermarket.
The fire reportedy started from a section of the supermarket after 19:00hrs and it began spreading quickly.
Reports from eyewitnesses are that a heavy wind in the area caused the flames to spread rapidly.
One of the owners of a nearby building that was affected called Hassan Variety claimed that persons were trying to loot as firefighters tried to contain the fire.
The firefighters were able to contain the fire but up to press time they were still on the ground trying to fully extinquish the blaze.
