Dec 14, 2025 Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh if freeness ever get elected in Guyana, it would win by landslide. Some Guyanese got a sixth sense for anything free. Is like radar in dem head. The minute dem hear “free,” dem shoes lace up by demself and dem does reach before the thing even start.
Is so with staff parties. Management does say, “Come relax, have a lil bite,” and half the staff hear, “Come empty the place.” From the minute dem reach, is plate, plate, and more plate. One for now, one for later, one for “just in case.” Dem boys seh some people does eat like tomorrow cancel.
And don’t talk about the drinks. When dem see open bar, dem eye does shine like headlight. Beer in one hand, rum in the next, and wine “just to wash it down.” Some of dem does drink like is competition and prize money deh at the end.
Now leh me tell y’all a lil story. One staff party, dem boys see a fella who never drink much normally. But when freeness deh, courage does come free too. He start with one beer. Then he say, “Ahight, just one small rum.” After that, he decide to mix drinks like chemist. Rum and juice, rum and coke, rum and water—because hydration important, yuh know.
Half-hour later, the man start to sway like coconut tree in breeze. He tell one serious joke and laugh before anybody else could. Then he hug the boss and call him “me brother.” Five minutes after that, he making speech he never rehearse, thanking management for “everything since 1983,” even though the company start in 2010.
By ten o’clock, the same man who come to “just pass through” asleep on two chairs push together, holding a piece of chicken like is teddy bear. When dem wake him, he ask if food still serving.
Dem boys seh freeness sweet, but it dangerous. Some people don’t just enjoy it—they attack it. And when morning come and headache start, dem does still say, “But at least we eat good last night.”
Talk half. Leff half.
