(Kaieteur News) – Twenty ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were charged this year as part of the organisation’s continued push for transparency, accountability, and equal application of the law.
Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken, speaking at the GPF’s annual Christmas award ceremony Friday, said the Force has intensified efforts to uphold fairness and maintain public trust. As an example, he noted that 20 police officers accused of criminal offences were taken before the courts and are currently facing prosecution.
One of the most recent cases involved 20-year-old Police Constable Daniel Henry, attached to Regional Division One, who was remanded to prison after a viral video showed him brandishing an AK-47 rifle while reportedly intoxicated. Other ranks charged this year faced allegations including possession of narcotics, child rape, larceny, and other criminal offences.
Commissioner Hicken also reported that serious crime dropped by 25.22%, while the crime clear-up rate rose to 61.76%, attributing the improvement to strengthened intelligence capabilities.
“A 61% clear-up rate is the result of hard work, demonstrating stronger proactive policing with the establishment of regional and district intelligence communities across the divisions,” he said, adding that these networks have helped the Force detect, prevent, and respond to threats with greater precision.
The ceremony celebrated the dedication and outstanding service of officers across various ranks, marking what the Commissioner described as a year of transformation for the GPF.
“In 2025, we are not just constructing buildings; we are building capacity,” Hicken added.
He also underscored the importance of accountability and professionalism, pointing to strengthened oversight mechanisms, recruitment and training of prosecutors, ethical performance evaluations, and a new fleet-management assessment system designed to ensure transparency.
“Accountability became a system. Professionalism was further strengthened through revised police standards, training, and oversight to safeguard state resources,” the commissioner said.
He urged officers to embrace the standards of a modern Police Force.
“As we enter a new era of policing, the standards will rise, expectations will sharpen, and our nation will depend on us more than ever. Let us answer that responsibility with honour, lead with professionalism, and build a Police Force that is worthy of trust and integrity,” he told the gathering.
