Kaieteur Sports – The chess segment of the 2025 Inter-Guiana Games began yesterday as Suriname, French Guiana, and host nation Guyana clashed over the boards at the National Racquet Centre.
Suriname stamped their authority early, sweeping both categories against French Guiana.
Suriname defeated French Guiana 2–0, winning 3 games to 0, with one match rescheduled for Sunday.
The Surinamese girls delivered an even more commanding performance, taking a clean 2–0 match victory and winning all four games on the board.
The perfect start positioned Suriname as early leaders heading into the crucial second round.
The host nation, however, made an emphatic entrance in Round 2, turning the momentum of the tournament in their favour with back-to-back match victories over Suriname.
In the second round, Guyana defeated Suriname 2–0, scoring 3.5–0.5 on the board.
The Guyanese secured three wins and a draw, showcasing depth across all boards.
The Guyanese girls mirrored the Open team’s success, also winning 2–0 with an identical 3.5–0.5 scoreline. Their three victories plus a well-fought draw reflected both discipline and confidence.
With Suriname dominating early and Guyana responding with equal strength, the chess event is shaping into one of the most competitive disciplines of this year’s Inter-Guiana Games. Sunday’s rescheduled match may play a decisive role in the final standings.
More results and updates will follow as the tournament progresses. Play continues throughout the weekend at the National Racquet Centre.
