(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) will soon issue warrants and summons 95 of the top speeding offenders who have failed to pay their tickets or attend court.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the GPF said that the decision follows the implementation of the Automated Speed Ticketing System, launched earlier this year under the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) Project.
“President Ali recently stated that he was briefed by the Guyana Police Force Traffic Team and expects that within the next 48 hours, widespread charges will begin, including the exploration of possible suspension of licences,” the statement said.
From the date of its launch, the system has generated thousands of tickets, which the Force claims has resulted in a significant reduction in speeding violations across major roadways.
The technology utilizes radar speed sensors alongside high-definition cameras which are connected to a secure, cloud-based platform to automatically detect and ticket vehicles exceeding the legal speed limit.
“Motorists are encouraged to check whether they have any outstanding tickets by visiting the online portal at https://speed.gpf.gov.gy and ensuring that their information is up immediate payment of tickets will avoid any legal proceedings,” police said.
Failure to pay fines will result in offenders facing legal proceedings and an arrest warrant – a legal order issued by the court authorising the arrest of a person who has failed to appear before the court- for unpaid tickets.
The GPF said that failure to comply after a warrant is issued can result in further legal penalties.
Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, emphasised the importance of compliance, stating, “The Automated Speed Ticketing System (ASTS) has proven its effectiveness in reducing dangerous driving. However, enforcement must go hand in hand. We urge all motorists to pay your fines, obey the law, and help us make the roads safer for everyone.”
He added, “The system is fair, accurate, and fully automated. There is no manual interference, no bias, and no excuses. Every driver is treated equally under this technology. Our focus is not punishment, but prevention. The fewer people we have speeding, the fewer lives we lose.”
The ASTS allows for there to be full transparency and accountability, additionally offenders have the option of paying their fines via the Mobile Money Guyana (MMG) platform, either through the app or the MMG agents.
The Police Force is reminding that, “Speeding remains one of the primary causes of traffic fatalities in Guyana.” Between January 1 and June 14, 2025, the country recorded 54 fatal road accidents—an increase of 17% compared to 46 during the same period in 2024. These accidents resulted in 58 deaths, with speeding as the leading cause, accounting for 48 of the 54 fatal accidents in 2025, the GPF said.
Meanwhile, the GPF said that as Guyana’s road network expands it remains committed to using data driven enforcement and technology to improve compliance and protect lives. Motorists are also urged to drive responsibly and adhere to posted speed limits. The GPF’s continued message is simple: “Slow down, save lives.”
On November 28, Kaieteur News reported that President Irfaan Ali warned drivers with outstanding speeding tickets to pay up within 48hrs or have their licence suspended. The president was speaking at a reception held at the residence of the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Guyana for the 5th European Mission.
The head-of-state said that so far, 42,000 tickets have been issued by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for traffic related offences. He said that close to 10,000 persons have paid their fines electronically.
“… in another few days, you will see the top offenders published in the newspaper with their outstanding amounts in terms of tickets, and I use this forum to calmly appeal to those who have outstanding payments, to do so within the next 48 hours, or the licence will be suspended,” Ali warned.
The president made it clear that the systems invested in and implemented by the government must yield benefits. Additionally, President Ali said that by the end of this year police cars will be equipped with smart meters and ranks will be provided with smart cars.
The aim, he said, is to have things done electronically, recorded and stored therefore removing the human interface and allowing technology to help people to do better, “because we have it in us to do better.”
