(Kaieteur News) – The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, through its Public Health Department, has shut down an illegal daycare operation reportedly run by Cuban nationals, after uncovering unsafe and substandard conditions during a surprise enforcement exercise.
In a press release, the council said the operation was led by Medical Officer of Health Suzette Reynolds, Chief Environmental Health Officer, Abiola Baker, and officers of the Childcare and Protection Agency (CC&PA), alongside Senior Registration and Licensing Officer Ms. Canterbury.
Upon inspection of the Robb Street location, CC&PA officers removed all children and their caregiver, transporting them to the agency’s Broad Street office for processing and safeguarding. Parents were contacted and retrieved their children after interviews with authorities. They were subsequently referred to register at compliant daycare facilities closer to their workplaces to ensure proper care. School-aged children found at the site were referred to the Ministry of Education for appropriate placement and follow-up.
Authorities reported a series of troubling findings at the illegal facility, including: Severe overcrowding; no potties and inadequate sanitary provisions; caregiver untrained and not naturalised as a Guyanese; poor environmental hygiene and other unsafe and substandard conditions.
The Mayor and City Council is urging the public to ensure that any daycare service used is registered, licensed, and fully compliant with national childcare and public health regulations. The Council says it will continue working with relevant agencies to protect children and hold illegal operators accountable.
