(Kaieteur News) – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is demanding clarity and transparency on the reinstatement of former Commander of Region Three and Assistant Commissioner, Khalid Mandall.
Both the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and the APNU coalition noted that it is concerning that Mandall would be reinstated without explanation.
Mandall was sent on administrative leave to facilitate the investigation into the death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge who was found dead in the pool of the Double Day International Hotel, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo back in April this year.
“This development raises legitimate questions about transparency, accountability, and the processes governing such decisions. The Adrianna Younge case touched the conscience of the nation and highlighted several unresolved issues that warranted clear and credible follow-up. Given the seriousness of the matter, the public reasonably expected full disclosure and a proper accounting of any investigative or administrative review conducted. The return of Mr. Mandall to active duty without any accompanying explanation has therefore contributed to public unease and the perception that important decisions affecting public trust are being managed without adequate communication,” the statement said.
PNCR/APNU said it is reaffirming its longstanding position that accountability, due process, and public confidence in the Guyana Police Force must remain paramount, holding to the belief that that the institutions of the state function best when the public is kept informed and when decisions are accompanied by clear justification.
“In this regard, we respectfully call on the relevant authorities to provide a full and transparent explanation to the people of Guyana. Key questions remain: Who authorised the reinstatement? What review or investigation informed this decision? Why was the public not updated on a matter with significant implications for trust in law enforcement?” it asked.
In this light, the party said citizens deserve clarity, fairness and openness in all matters that touch justice and national institutions, therefore there should be the strengthening of accountability, democracy, and transparency in order to promote confidence in the systems that serve the people.
“The PNCR/APNU remains committed to advocating for fairness, truth, and equality before the law. We will continue to engage constructively and responsibly to ensure that national institutions operate with the highest standards of integrity. The people of Guyana deserve no less,” the party said.
