(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh is one of de great mysteries of Georgetown—right up deh with how Stabroek Market clock still telling time from 1973 and how some roads does bruk up soon after dem build. But de biggest riddle of all is this: Why we need a City Council when it can’t even tek care of its own house, literally?
City Hall, de grand old wooden lady of Georgetown, was lef’ suh neglected dat termites start applying fuh property rights. Rain was walking through de roof widout even wiping it foot. De place was so run-down dem boys swear if you sneeze too hard, it woulda collapse like a pack of cards. And who had to rescue it? Government—dropping near $800M. If you cyan maintain yuh own home, how you gon maintain a whole capital city?
Then look story: La Repentir Cemetery, which City Hall supposed to maintain since people paying fuh graves and upkeep. But is government had to pump in $350M to clean it—for de third time! When cemetery need cleaning three times by government, something dead wrong—besides de obvious. Dem boys seh City Hall must believe cemetery is a forest reserve or wildlife sanctuary.
And don’t start pon Stabroek Market. City Hall running it, but government helping footing de bill fuh repairs to de part wah did fall down not so long ago. A market that supposed to be a source of revenue does end up a source of headache—mostly fuh taxpayers.
Roads? Avenues? Canals? Gutters? City Hall supposed to mind dem. But government does jump in quicker than a minibus conductor flashing “last seat.” At this point, dem boys feel if a city dog get lost, City Hall gon call government fuh help find it.
So dem boys asking: Why we need a City Council? Just fuh hold meetings and blame de public fuh not paying rates? If government got to clean, fix, repair, restore, repaint, and re-bless everything, then City Hall is what? A sightseeing spot?
Dem boys seh maybe we should preserve it like a museum: “Here lies City Council—an institution dat used to run Georgetown… until Georgetown had to run it.”
Talk half. Leff half.
