(Kaieteur News) – The reputed husband of 36-year-old Latoya Griffith, who passed away from pregnancy-related complications last Wednesday, is adding his voice to already mounting calls by family members and friends for a thorough investigation into the death of his partner.
Griffith along with her newborn died at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital on Wednesday, leaving behind three other children.
40-year-old Helroy Williams, with whom the now dead woman would have gotten their first child together, told Kaieteur News that he is struggling to absorb the reality, since he lost both his partner and his newborn baby boy.
According to the devastated man, Griffith’s condition during pregnancy caused her to visit the high-risk clinic, following which she was told to collect her essentials from home, as she would be admitted. Detailing a series of communication between himself and his wife, Williams recalled being informed by Griffith that she would have to undergo cesarean section.
“When she got back and she was in the hospital, she told me that in the night they were going to cut her. When I go back, nothing like that. They push up the tablets to bring down the pain.”
He disclosed that she was given three pills in total. For the second pill, Griffith had maintained that she had no pain. Moreover, the woman agreed to have the C-section done.
“The last morning, I spoke to her, she said she’s willing for the cut, she ain’t getting no pain.”
The family on Wednesday received a call from the hospital informing them that Griffith needed blood, and that she had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
But Williams claimed that it was all a move to cover. He said the hospital should have moved ahead with the C-section rather than try to induce labor.
“Since Tuesday she’s in there. They know she’s a high-risk patient. Why you had to push up tablets or whatever? The next day when I went, the Wednesday morning, I see she’s hardly moving. I tell she go back inside and catch her rest. That was the last word I spoke to her,” the grieving man said.
Holding his emotions, he called for more prudence and sharpness on the part of officials at the hospital. At the same time, Williams is pleading for timely justice.
“I feel it, and I wish we could get justice. (The) hospital needs to do better. It’s a high-risk patient. They’re supposed to do everything….it was supposed to be the best care she was to have. I’m feeling it. It’s both gone. It’s not one, and she leave kids. It’s so sad. I wish we could get justice.”
Family members said some officials reached out to them seeking to ensure that the matter is not made public. The institution has promised to launch an inquiry into the incident.
Griffith, one of eight siblings, worked at the No. 19 Health Center on the Corentyne.
