Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s long-cherished Boxing Day sporting tradition is poised for an exciting revival as Briso Promotions, in partnership with the Caribbean Boxing Organization (CBO), stages a Pro-Am Boxing Card on Friday, December 26, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The event marks the first official showcase of the newly formed CBO, headed by Seon Bristol, and promises to reignite the electric fight-night atmosphere that once defined the holiday season for local fans.
The card was officially unveiled yesterday at a press conference hosted at the Wind Jammer Hotel, where key figures in Guyana’s boxing fraternity offered their endorsement and enthusiasm.
Among those present were President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool, President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, along with several other officials who underscored the significance of the event, not only for Guyana, but for the advancement of boxing throughout the Caribbean.
Speaking at the launch, Abdool welcomed the long-awaited return of professional boxing in Guyana, recalling that Boxing Day cards were once the heartbeat of the sport locally.
Ninvalle echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of the Pro-Am format. He revealed that amateur boxers featured on the card will receive a purse, an initiative fully supported by the GBA.
Ninvalle explained that the International Boxing Association (IBA) has encouraged its affiliates to offer monetary support to amateur fighters, noting that this move aligns perfectly with that mandate and serves as crucial motivation for athletes striving to stay committed to the sport. Specific payout amounts will be announced in the coming days.
For Bristol, the December 26 spectacle represents the first step in realizing the mission of the CBO, a unified body of promoters from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Martin, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Grenada, and Curacao.
The goal, he said, is to present consistent, well-organized, professionally structured events that elevate Caribbean boxing.
Fans can look forward to an exciting slate of international matchups featuring fighters from Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Grenada, and the Dominican Republic.
The opening bout, a Lightweight contest, will see Trinidad & Tobago’s Tianna Guy take on Carol Paniague of the Dominican Republic.
Barbados’ Tyreec Tait and Grenada’s Rickenson Henry will square off in a Middleweight clash, while Guyana’s Terrence Adams meets Trinidad and Tobago’s Anthony Joseph in a Catchweight showdown.
Rasheild Williams of the Bahamas will face Jamaica’s Nico Yeyo, just before Guyana’s own Desmond Amsterdam battles Wilson Fernaandez of the Dominican Republic in a highly anticipated Super Middleweight bout.
The night concludes with Olympian Keevin Allicock going glove-to-glove with Dominican Republic’s Yendy Rodriguez in what promises to be a show-stopping finale.
Officials agreed that the December 26 card is a symbolic rebirth of Boxing Day fights, as well as a blueprint for the region, signaling a bold new era for Caribbean boxing.
