Kaieteur Sports – The Virgin Islands strengthened their status as the team to beat at the FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship, rolling to an emphatic 84–33 victory over Suriname on Friday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The result keeps them as the only undefeated team in the tournament, firmly positioned atop the standings with a perfect record.
The Virgin Islands wasted no time taking control, opening the game with a commanding 25–4 first quarter before adding 28 more points in the second period.
Taylor Jones led the way with a game-high 18 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and knocking down three three-pointers.
She received strong support from Natalie Kleemann-Day with 13 points and J-Naya Ephraim with 14, while centre Anisha George continued her reliable play, finishing with 11 points on 80% shooting.
Suriname’s Chiniqua Pengel scored 12 points to lead her team, while Beyonce Jedinie and Mirelva Marica added five and four respectively.
A 21–8 closing quarter sealed the victory for the Virgin Islands, who remain on a clear path toward one of the coveted spots at the 2026 CentroBasket.
Meanwhile, the Bahamas delivered a powerful performance of their own, cruising to an 88–56 win over Jamaica to solidify their position in the tournament.
The victory boosts the Bahamas’ chances of advancing to the 2026 CentroBasket, while Jamaica faces a tougher road ahead as they look to regroup for their remaining group fixtures.
As the FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship continues at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, teams are battling for position and momentum heading into the final round of games.
The tournament continues today, with Guyana playing Suriname at 8:30 pm, but earlier in the day, Jamaica will look to bounce back against the Virgin Islands.
