Virgin Islands overpower Guyana, despite Joy Adams’ effort

Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s dream start at the FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship came to a grinding halt last evening, as the Virgin Islands imposed their will on both ends of the floor to hand the hosts a 78–54 defeat at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Despite another monster performance from forward Joy Adams, who battled tirelessly and finished with a commanding 13 points and 15 rebounds, Guyana struggled to overcome the relentless defensive traps and physicality brought by the Virgin Islands.

Adams’ energy, second-chance efforts, and leadership kept Guyana afloat during key stretches, but the pressure proved overwhelming.

From jump ball, the Virgin Islands dictated the tempo, targeting Guyana’s ball-handlers and forcing hurried decisions.

Their aggressive pressure resulted in 27 Guyana turnovers, many of which the visitors converted into fast-break points that swung momentum early.

Joy Adams was smothered against the Virgin Islands

Offensively, the Virgin Islands leaned on the dominant play of Anisha George, who bullied her way to a game-high 23 points on a near-perfect 10-of-12 shooting night.

Guard Taylor Jones added 18 points, including four deep three-pointers that repeatedly halted Guyana’s attempts to close the gap.

Guyana’s offensive rhythm, so fluent in their historic win over The Bahamas, never materialised. The hosts shot just 29.8% from the field and struggled mightily from beyond the arc, going 3-of-27 (11%).

Every time Guyana appeared poised to go on a run, turnovers and missed opportunities swung the momentum back to the visitors.

Still, there were bright sparks for the home side. Ruth Adams poured in 16 points and six rebounds, showing her trademark scoring ability, while Anaya McDavid added 12 points and seven boards with efficient finishing around the rim.

But with Guyana unable to take care of the ball or find consistency from long range, Brown’s heroic effort was not enough to keep the game within reach.

With two games remaining in the single round-robin format, Guyana now shifts focus to a crucial matchup against Suriname tomorrow, before facing regional powerhouse Jamaica on Sunday.

The hosts will look to clean up their ball-handling, rediscover their offensive flow, and lean on the leadership of players like Adams, as they push for a top-three finish and a berth at next year’s Centrobasket.
