It was a night to remember for the home fans, and the Ramlall sisters. Leading the charge was the electric Amisha Ramlall, who dropped a blistering 35 points, while her sisters Arisha and Ashna added 13 and 12 respectively.
Not to be outdone, Ruth Adams put together a commanding all-round performance with 22 points, showcasing Guyana’s offensive depth and teamwork.
The victory gives Guyana early momentum in the five-team tournament and sets up a tantalizing showdown tonight against pre-tournament favourites, the Virgin Islands, at 8:30 pm.
It also marks a strong return for the Women’s Caribbean Championship, being played for the first time since 2022 in Cuba.
Roared on by a boisterous home crowd, Guyana came out firing, racing to a 32–25 lead after the first quarter. The Bahamas, however, showed their grit, led by Valerie Nesbitt, who poured in a game-high 35 points to keep her team in striking distance.
By halftime, the Guyanese women held a 48–40 edge, but they came out of the locker room with renewed energy and defensive pressure.
The third quarter was all Guyana, a mix of sharp shooting, tight defense, and dominant rebounding, as they surged to a 76–57 advantage heading into the final frame.
Ayana Mc David was relentless on the boards, snatching six rebounds, while team captain Joy Adams, the Spain-based pro, flirted with a triple-double, tallying 12 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds.
With confidence sky-high and the home fans firmly behind them, Guyana will look to carry this momentum into tonight’s highly anticipated clash with the Virgin Islands.
The tournament continues this afternoon with more action tipping off at 4:30 pm at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
