Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill advances to quarterfinals at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Guyana’s leading table tennis star Chelsea Edghill, OLY has advanced to the Women’s Singles Quarterfinals at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Sports Association (ISSA) Games, after producing two outstanding performances marked by grit, experience, and determination.

In earlier rounds, Guyana’s contingent made a strong start to their campaign: Elishaba Johnson defeated El Hacen Ahmed Salem (Mauritania) 4–0 in the Men’s Singles Round of 64 to move into the Round of 32.
National Men’s Champion Shemar Britton received a bye directly into the Round of 32.
Chelsea Edghill, OLY came through a 7th-game thriller, defeating Nazim Aisthan Rafa (Maldives) 4–3 (13–11, 6–11, 6–11, 11–3, 10–12, 11–9, 11–9) to advance to the Round of 16, where she faced Uganda’s Judith Parvin Nangozi for a place in the quarterfinals.

Later in the day, Edghill once again demonstrated her composure under pressure, edging past Nangozi—a World Championships qualifier—with another tight 4–3 victory, securing her spot among the top eight women at the Games. She now faces World No. 81, Sibel Altinkaya of Turkey, in Wednesday’s Quarterfinal for a chance to reach the semifinals and contend for a medal.
In other matches, Jasmine Billingy, Guyana’s emerging women’s talent, was defeated by Ece Harac of Turkey (4–0) in the Round of 16. On the men’s side, Shemar Britton lost to Ali Al-Khadrawi of Saudi Arabia, while Elishaba Johnson exited the competition after a spirited showing against Seyedamirhossein Hodaei of Iran.
