(Kaieteur News) – The female police corporal who fatally struck 15-year-old Navindra Mahes on the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) in October was on Tuesday placed on $500,000 bail after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
The cop, 35-year-old Yonelle Cumberbatch, of Eastville Housing Scheme, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Abigail Gibbs. She was not required to plead to the charge.
Mahes was struck will attempting to cross the Success Public Road, ECD at about 07:30h on October 30, 2025. The teen’s family was plunged into mourning and has since called on the authorities to ensure that justice is served.
The matter was adjourned to January 6, 2026. As part of the bail conditions, Cumberbatch is required to lodge her passport with the Court and report to the Police on the first Monday of every month.
Meanwhile, following Tuesday’s court hearing Mahes’ devastated mom told reporters that her son did not deserve to die. “I lost my son. She will go home and see hers but I cannot go home and see mine. How is it fair, tell me. How is it fair?” the inconsolable mom cried after the bail was granted to Cumberbatch.
She continued: “I was expecting her to go to jail…she does not deserve to come out here. My son was on the pedestrian crossing. He was not wrong!”
