Kaieteur Sports – The annual National Draughts Championship starts today and is scheduled to continue next Sunday, November 2, at the Transport Sports Club Pavillion, Thomas Lands.
Today, the B-Competition commences with many of the junior players vying for supremacy. Based on the number of entries and the quality of the players, some of the top finishers are expected to qualify for a place in the A-Division, next Sunday.
Navin Meighbarran is the reigning champion; should Navin defend his title, he will gain promotion to the A-Division.
However, a tough challenge is expected from Esan Anderson, who can put a block to that since these two players have rivaled each other over the last couple of years.
Veteran Aubrey Rowe is another competitor to reckon with since his games is stepping up in the last few outings.
The games start at 10:30 am and will be run on a round-robin system. The tournament will be played on the local 8×8 boards.
The entrance fee is $1000 per person. All prizes for B and A competitions would be handed out after the completion of the tournament, next weekend since the Association is still awaiting some of its sponsors.
All B players in the Regions are invited to participate. The tournament will be supervised by the President of the Association, Jiaram.
