(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works has started testing its weigh-in-motion truck scales as the government pushes forward with enforcing new road regulations aimed at curbing overloaded trucks traversing the country’s roadways.
Subject minister Juan Edghill on Thursday overlooked the testing scales which would be used to monitor the weight of the trucks, which was done on High Street, Georgetown.
Earlier this month, Kaieteur News reported that Cabinet gave its approval for new regulations to be implemented with the standard weight per truck is 15 tonnes per axel.
“So yes, government, through the Ministry of Public Works has started enforcement regulations of 15 tonnes per axle and use of weigh-in-motion scales to determine the weight of trucks and to ensure we safeguard our highways, our roads and our bridges,” the minister said at a press conference.
Stressing the importance of this new approach, Edghill said, “We cannot, as a country, continue to build infrastructure, roads and bridges, and shortly after, have them damaged because of the indiscriminate use and carrying of excessive loads by trucks and articulated vehicles.”

Officials of the Ministry of Public Works testing the new weigh-in-motion scales along High Street, Georgetown on Thursday.
On Thursday, the ministry’s team began testing the scales and this is expected to continue over the next 48 hours at various locations including the East Coast of Demerara, along the Linden/ Soesdyke Highway, the Heroes Highway and the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
“I like to inform the nation that mobile teams will be dispatched at our various roadways. In the next couple of days, every trucker, every transportation provider whether it is sand, aggregate, cement, steel whatever is the merchandise or materials that you are using, we’ll be testing and enforcing on the weight limit,” he informed.
Once the 48-hour trial is completed, strict enforcement will begin on the roadways across the country. Minister Edghill said once a truck driver is found overload, the truck will be parked and the excess weight will be removed. The truck driver may also be prosecuted.
“If persons believe that this is a joke, we will clamp the trucks, we will impound the trucks, and we will use every available mechanism under the regulations and the laws to enforce it,” he declared.

That is no way to WEIGH a vehicle on a scale.
all I see, 2 front wheels on scale, whilst the back wheels on roadbed, instead
of on a scale. Who is Edghill fooling ?
I see the logic- weigh any truck front first, then rear second, then total the
weights and get a number ? However, the front end has the ENGINE.
