No bail for Devin Sears …alleged accomplice jailed for four years
(Kaieteur News) – Thirty-nine-year-old Devin Sears, a former APNU+AFC member of parliament, was on Thursday remanded to prison, after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of marijuana trafficking.
Sears, along with his co-accused, 69-year-old Albert Sandy, appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court, where he entered the not guilty plea. Sandy, meanwhile, pleaded guilty and was handed a four-year sentence.

Sears, who was represented by attorney Nigel Hughes, requested bail. His lawyer argued that the former legislator was not a flight risk. The prosecution, however, objected to bail, pointing out that the charge is a serious one.
Sears and Sandy were nabbed Monday morning with a quantity of ganja during a police stop and search operation at Bamia, Region 10.
In a statement police said that at about 20:41hrs on Monday a team was on mobile patrol duties in the vicinity of the Old Bamia Police Checkpoint in Linden, when they arrested Sears and Sandy, a farmer of Tacama, Upper Berbice River. The men were found to be in possession of 310.71 kilograms of Cannabis.
According to the police, while on patrol duties, the ranks were conducting random ‘stop and search’, when they stopped a dark blue Toyota Hiace minibus, bearing registration number BAJ 4486, property of Region #10 Tourism Committee Inc. The vehicle was driven by Sears, of Mackenzie, Linden, accompanied by Sandy who was seated in the front passenger seat.
Police said upon stopping the vehicle, the driver began acting in a suspicious manner (sweating profusely). One of the ranks asked the driver what he was transporting, to which he replied, “I am transporting tourism plants.” The rank then instructed the driver to pull to the side of the road and informed him that a search would be conducted on the vehicle. The driver acknowledged.
Police discovered twenty-two bulky black plastic bags and four large brown canvas bags inside the vehicle containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. Both men were told of the offence, arrested, and cautioned.
Sears, police said, remained silent, while Sandy admitted ownership, stating that the narcotics belonged to him and that he had paid Sears to transport him to Parika. Both men were arrested and escorted to the Mackenzie Police Station along with the suspected cannabis, which was weighed in their presence and amounted to 310.71 kilograms.
