(Kaieteur News) – Police in Regional Division #2 are investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of 34-year-old Yolanda John of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, on Wednesday night.
The fatal crash occurred around 19:30 hrs along the Elisa Public Road, Essequibo Coast, and involved a motorcycle (registration number unknown) driven by 23-year-old Leroy Prince, also of Dartmouth, and a cow, police said in a press release.
According to investigators, Prince had picked up his girlfriend, Yolanda, from work and was heading north along the public road when a cow suddenly appeared on the western side. Prince told police he swerved to avoid hitting the animal but still collided with it, losing control of the motorcycle.
The impact threw both riders onto the roadway, where Yolanda sustained severe injuries. She was rushed to the Lima Regional Hospital but died while receiving treatment.
A breathalyser test conducted on Prince returned negative for alcohol. He remains in police custody assisting with the investigation, while the motorcycle has been lodged at the Anna Regina Police Station for inspection. A post-mortem examination conducted on Thursday by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh confirmed that Yolanda John died from multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident. Police investigations are ongoing.
