President calls for moral renewal, civic education drive across Guyana
(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali is urging the nation’s religious and social institutions to join forces with government to rebuild Guyana’s moral and civic foundations, warning that faith leaders must take an active role in tackling social decay.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Cummings Lodge Water Treatment Plant on Saturday, President Ali announced that his cabinet has been instructed to craft a national programme that directly engages churches, mosques, temples, and other community groups in promoting discipline, responsibility, and civic pride, the Department of Public Information reported.
“I have asked cabinet to work on a programme to engage our churches, mosques, and temples on a plan to deal with social challenges in our society, a plan for civic and moral education, a plan to build quality citizens in Guyana,” President Ali declared.
He said the initiative will support efforts to discourage harmful habits such as gambling, while promoting respect, responsibility, and community spirit.
In a firm message to faith-based leaders, the president stressed that their involvement is not optional. “These entities have a responsibility to start now,” he warned. “If you don’t help to fix it, we will have to fix you.”
Dr. Ali reminded that religious leaders have long served as moral anchors and must now play a renewed, active role in shaping values, especially among the youth.
“Guyana’s transformation is not just about roads and bridges,” he said. “It’s about building citizens of character — people with strong moral grounding, discipline, and purpose.”
The head of state emphasised that the nation’s progress depends not only on economic development, but also on moral renewal, calling on faith communities to lead the charge in shaping a more responsible and united society.
