(Kaieteur News) – Following reports that a section of the recently commissioned Buzz Bee Dam Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) has failed, the Ministry of Housing on Friday announced that the contractor will correct the defects.
In a statement, the ministry stated that the Buzz Bee Dam Road remains under its one-year defects liability period.

Back in August, President Irfaan Ali had declared open the newly constructed $10.1 billion Diamond to Buzz Bee Dam four-lane highway. The project was done in lots by contractors GuyAmerica Construction, VALS Construction, China Railway First Group, NABI, and H.Nauth and Sons.
“The projects department of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) wishes to make it clear that during this period, any defects identified must be addressed by the contractor within the stipulated timeframe. Recently, the project engineer observed some deflection along a section of the road constructed by H. Nauth Contracting. In keeping with the contract terms, the contractor was instructed to carry out the necessary corrective works,” the ministry explained.
The ministry shared that these works have been scheduled in coordination with the site engineers and are expected to be completed within the next four days.
“The contractor has also been cautioned that failure to remedy the defects within the required period will result in the company being recommended for penalties, in accordance with the contract,” the housing ministry warned.
Meanwhile, highlighting the defects in a public statement, opposition member Sherod Duncan stated that residents shared with him that the road surface already shows “signs of warping and waviness,” which should not exhibit mere weeks after commissioning.
Duncan claimed that the road which was “completed hurriedly” before the 2025 elections, raises a series of questions.
“This is not the first time Guyanese taxpayers have faced such outcomes. The Schoonord–Crane four-lane highway opened with cracks and crumbling concrete within days; the Heroes Highway drew complaints about its uneven surface soon after completion. Yet each time, the public is told the defects are minor, while the costs and excuses pile up,” he said in his statement.
He said the Buzz Bee Dam road cannot become another case of ribbon-cutting before readiness. “I therefore call for an independent engineering review, public disclosure of test results, and clear accountability for any substandard work. The people of Guyana deserve durable infrastructure built to standard, not shortcuts for political timelines,” Duncan said.
