Mother of 7-year-old accident victim frustrated, canter driver fined $50,000
(Kaieteur News) – Two weeks after he struck down seven-year-old Tiequan Scarville with his canter on the Fyrish Public Road, Calvin Chisholm was charged with dangerous driving and fined $50,000, or an alternative three-month jail time.

The child’s mother and other family members who mounted calls for justice since the accident on October 3, are disappointed with Friday’s outcome. Towanna Yorrick, said the fine is just a “slap on the wrist.”
At the Albion Magistrates’ Court, Yorrick, of Fyrish Village, Corentyne related that Chisholm pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.
An offer was made by the driver to her family to have the matter settled. That offer was declined.
“The settlement that they wanted to offer was a slap in the face, a slap in the face of my child who is uncertain what the road to his future is going to look like, given the fact that he would’ve suffered severe brain injury.”
One of the bones in her son’s head, she disclosed, had to be removed during surgery. Despite his remarkable recovery within such a short time, there is the possibility that he could be affected in some way further down the line, as injuries to the head, specifically the brain can cause crippling effects.
She said based on what the police read in their report to the court, Chisholm had cited brakes failure. The magistrate then re-read the charges and asked if the accused would like to maintain his plea. He did change it to guilty, with the explanation that his steering wheel got stuck, then proceeded to say that it was the mirror of the vehicle that hit the child. She disputed that with the fact that due to the impact of the vehicle, her son suffered a fractured skull, with his bones protruding.
“How can a mirror from a canter hit somebody in the head, causing that person’s bones to be broken in multiple pieces?” She reasoned, suggesting that footage be acquired from points near the accident scenes, where possible.
