(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has described Guyana as “a country in a hurry,” urging international investors to take advantage of the opportunities emerging from the country’s rapid economic transformation.
Delivering remarks at the International Business Conference (IBC) on Wednesday afternoon at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown, Minister Edghill said Guyana is the place to be, pointing to billions in government-led projects that are reshaping the national landscape.
“Guyana’s infrastructural development has taken center stage largely because in the construct of things, when you’re battling hard for resources, you have to judge between what is extremely important and what can be done,” Edghill stated.
He explained that the government has been strategically investing in projects to address the country’s long-standing development deficit while simultaneously building new and emerging sectors. “We will use and invest money from the Natural Resource Fund to develop traditional sectors in Guyana and at the same time build new and emerging sectors,” the minister outlined.
Oil is currently being produced from the Stabroek Block located offshore Guyana. This block renowned for its vast oil potential, has been the subject of global attention since oil production commenced five years ago. Since oil production commenced in December 2019, Guyana has become a hotspot for foreign investment.
Minister Edghill noted, “There is a lot that is happening, and there is a lot that is going to continue to happen.”
He further outlined to the audience what the People’s Progressive Party government has been investing in. He outlined the administration’s ongoing infrastructural drive is valued at about US$3 billion and includes several flagship initiatives such as the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, which has been completed at a cost of US$262 million, the Wismar–Mackenzie River Bridge valued at US$36 million, and the Linden–Mabura Road, a 121-kilometre stretch currently under construction at a cost of GYD $33 billion.
Other major undertakings the minister noted include the East Bank Road Improvement Project from Good Success to Timehri, pegged at US$76 million, the East Coast–East Bank Bypass Road valued at US$130 million, and the East Coast/Railway Embankment Upgrade, which carries a price tag of US$192 million among other projects.
Minister Edghill said these developments are designed to link regions, boost commerce, and improve connectivity across Guyana.
“Guyana is a country in a hurry. Somebody has described it as a construction zone because everywhere you go there is construction. What we are doing is solving the development deficit while still having to do new things,” he remarked.
He noted that the completion of the new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge will immediately give rise to the next phase of development, including flyovers and expanded connections on both ends of the bridge, as traffic volumes continue to increase.
“The traffic volume have increased, we’ve got on a daily basis on the corridor that is causing the problem that we are working on right now more than 28,000 trucks per day, some of them making two and three trips per day on that same carriageway…” the minister pointed out. He further noted that every major project is being executed with the goal of supporting both new and traditional sectors from tourism to agriculture while creating opportunities for underserved communities.
“From 2025 to 2030 and beyond, Guyana is the place to be. Bring your money, your talent, and your people, because in some instances where labour is required, we need people so that we can build out this modern Guyana and see its transformation accelerated,” Edghill noted.
