Nandu and company pilot Demerara to commanding 50-run win

(Kaieteur Sports) – Demerara skipped to a 50-run win over the home team Essequibo, after a classy half-century from captain Matthew Nandu helped the defending champs draw first blood at the Joe Jagmohan Ground, Hampton Court.
Batting first, the visiting Demerara posted what turned out to be a match-winning 229-10 in 45.2 overs, after a brilliant start from the top 3 batsmen.
Opener Ushardeva Balgobin scored 40 with 7 fours to help set the tone of the innings, adding 67-runs with his partner and Demerara top scorer, Nandu .
The opener, who was likely eyeing a possible hundred after doing the hard work, fell for 73 off 102 balls with 7 fours.
Number 3 batsman Raymond Perez hit 3 fours and a six in his 51-ball 40, thus capping off the leading scorers list for their team.
Honorable mentions with the bat for Demerara included Mavindra Dindyal (14), Shamar Apple (11), Ashmead Nedd (10) and Richie Looknauth (10).
Essequibo had a reasonable bowling game thanks to seamer Thaddeus Lovell who bagged 4-43, with the senior pair of speedster Ronsford Beaton (2-29) and all-round spinner Ricardo Adams (2-39).
Facing a tricky chase at home, Essequibo misfired at the top after Kevon Boodie (29), Mark Gonsalves (11), Captain Kemol Savory (14) and Kanhayia Ramkaran (12) all fumbled their starts, which inevitably resulted in the team’s final score of 179 all out in the 38th over.
Anthony Adams (24) and top-scorer Paul (30) held the middle-lower order together alongside tail-enders Myhiem Khan (22*) and Lovell (24), who frustrated the Demerara bowlers despite the loss.
West Indies Under-19 all rounder Johnathan Van Lange, snared with his medium-pace 4-35 as Looknauth spun his way to 3-26, with a wicket apiece from pacer Ronaldo Alimohamed and spinner Ashmead Nedd.
Meanwhile, action continues today in Round 2 with the GCB Select XI playing Berbice at the Lusignan Ground. (Clifton Ross)
