Paruima to get $120M health centre
(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Health will be constructing a new health centre in Paruima Village, Region Seven to the tune of approximately $120 million.
The project, which went through the national competitive bidding process, has been awarded to contractor, Andrect Engineering and Construction. The contract sum is $120,891,500.
Kaieteur News understands that the village has an old health post and a doctor’s quarters where persons go to seek medical care. Prior to this however, residents traveled either to Georgetown or the nearest health facility in Kamarang to receive further healthcare.
Speaking with this newspaper on Wednesday, Toshao Lee Williams said the new project would be very beneficial to the village, noting that the health centre would be the first of its kind there.
He said Paruima has been one of the remote communities to have a telemedicine site providing specialised care.
“When this health centre is completed, at least we will have all the facilities inside there, whether it is pharmacy, dental, malaria (services). This project is going to bring a lot of positive impact to the village,” he related.
With a population of 900 persons, the village has a medex, mid-wife and community health workers who provide care to residents.
The contractor is expected to begin work next week.
The government has been upgrading health facilities across the country with the key objective of improving access through the introduction of telemedicine capabilities in remote communities, acquiring certain specialised capabilities, and deploying more modern technology.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony said the government has been constructing health centres and posts across the country to complement the regional hospitals and ensure modern facilities for healthcare workers across the regions.
This is aimed at decentralising and expanding the range of public healthcare services provided to citizens, enhancing accessibility for communities nationwide.
The government has enhanced healthcare access through the construction of 25 new health centres and health posts across the country. Notably, close to 380 health facilities are operating in the country ensuring that efficient medical care is available to all citizens.
Kaieteur News understands that the health centres being constructed offer a wide range of services, including maternal and child health care, family planning, general outpatient services, chronic disease management, school health programmes, pharmacy services, and home visits, ensuring comprehensive health support for all residents.
