(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is on the hunt for the suspects in the murder of 35-year-old Yosber Alberto Rivero Sojo, a Venezuelan national, which occurred on Monday in the Quartz Stone Backdam area of the Cuyuni River.
According to a statement, Sojo who is a gold miner, was confronted by a group of about 12 men, all reportedly Venezuelan nationals, early Monday morning. The men accused him (the victim) of theft and subsequently assaulted him.
Kaieteur News reported on Tuesday that Calvin Johnson, a 50-year- security guard attached to a Russian company in the Cuyuni Backdam, reported the death to the Bartica Police Station. According to the police, Johnson told ranks that a female known only as Uma informed him that a male Venezuelan national was lying dead on the roadway.
Uma told Johnson that she was told that the man was beaten by other Venezuelan nationals.
“Upon receiving the information, Johnson said he proceeded to the scene where he observed the man lying motionless, covered with a multi-coloured hammock, with his face showing. He took photographs of the scene and later returned to his camp, from where he contacted the Bartica Police Station and made a report,” police detailed in their report on Monday.
Sojo’s body is at Bartica where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
