Kaieteur News – A 22-year-old Corentyne construction worker met a tragic end on Sunday after the motorcycle he was riding slammed into a culvert at Number 68 Village, leaving two pillion riders – one of them a 13-year-old boy seriously injured.
Dead is Eric Kissoon, called ‘Head’, of Number 72 Village. Relatives told Kaieteur News that Kissoon was intoxicated, unlicensed, not wearing a helmet, and riding a borrowed motorcycle with faulty brakes when the crash occurred. His father, Herman Kissoon, 65, a security officer at the Number 75 Village Hospital, recounted that he was on duty when he received word of the accident. “I hear an accident come in… then I hear one of the boys name is ‘Head’. I run over and see me son lay down lifeless,” the grieving father said in tears.
The father lamented that despite constant warnings, his son continued riding while drunk. “I does warn him over and over… but when he drink, he always want a motorbike. I don’t know why his friends keep lending him.” Eric’s reputed wife, Rihanna Davidson, 23, said the two had been making plans for their wedding. “I spoke to him midday Sunday… hours later I got the call that he met in an accident. By the time we reach the hospital, it was too late,” she cried. Both injured riders remain hospitalised in critical condition.
Meanwhile, in a press release police said the accident occurred at about 15:55h. Kissoon was reportedly driving motorcycle bearing registration number CN 7562. There were two pillion riders: a 13-year-old male student and a 28-year-old male both of whom are receiving medical attention.
“Initial investigations revealed that the motorcycle (CN 7562) was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane on the #68 Village public road, allegedly at a fast rate,” police said while noting that Kissoon was unlicensed and neither him nor the pillion riders were wearing safety helmets.
“The motorcyclist lost control while negotiating a right bend and collided with a bridge rail located on the eastern side of the road. This resulted in the motorcyclist and pillion riders receiving injuries on their bodies,” the statement from the Guyana Police Force said. The trio was picked up and taken to the #75 Regional Hospital where they were examined by a doctor. Kissoon died while receiving treatment. His body remains at the hospital’s mortuary where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
