Kaieteur News – Days ahead of the two-year anniversary of Israel’s war on Gaza, the “Solidarity with Gaza” group is inviting all Guyanese to join in a day of fasting and prayer outside the CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, on Thursday, September 25.
The group, in a media release on Tuesday, noted that October 2025 will mark two years of the “Israeli Apartheid State’s genocidal war on the defenseless civilian population of Gaza,” who it said remains under siege in what has become the world’s largest concentration camp.
“Guyanese of every religion and creed are called upon to join together in prayer, meditation and fasting on Thursday September 25, 2025, as a demonstration of solidarity with the people of Gaza. Persons are free to fast in whatever way they are able, for any amount of time during the day, from wherever they are- at home, work, school, in or out of Guyana. There will also be a tent set up by the CARICOM Secretariat on the Railway Embankment Road in Turkeyen where participants will be welcome to gather in person to pray and meditate,” the statement read.
The group said innocent Palestinian children, women, and men continue to be systematically slaughtered before daily. It said over 200,000 Palestinians are estimated to have been killed by Israeli forces in the last 23 months, with countless others horrifically injured and scarred for life, both physically and psychologically. Entire families and lineages have been wiped out. According to ‘Save The Children International’, at least one Palestinian child in Gaza has been killed every hour by Israeli forces since the war began, with the total number of children killed now surpassing 20,000. Israel has also been systematically destroying hospitals and starving the surviving people by restricting the flow of food, medicine, fuel, and other lifesaving materials into the Gaza Strip, the organization relayed.
“Just over a week ago, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry concluded that the State of Israel was responsible for committing genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. This comes a year after the International Court of Justice ruled (in September 2024) that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory was illegal, constituted apartheid, and must be brought to an end. This ruling was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
However, despite these rulings and widespread condemnation and protest by respected organisations and millions of people across the world, Israel continues to massacre, maim, torture, and displace Palestinians with impunity.”
Citing the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system, the group said an estimated 132,000 Palestinian children below the age of five are now projected to be at risk of death from acute malnutrition by June 2026.
“Our intention behind this action is to reclaim our collective humanity by not remaining silent or turning away from what is widely acknowledged to be a genocide committed by the State of Israel against the women, children, and men of Gaza.”
In addition to showing solidarity with the long-suffering Palestinian sisters, brothers, and their children, the group is also calling on CARICOM nations to take stronger, more meaningful action to uphold their obligations under international law, end the genocide, and hold Israel accountable.
“CARICOM’s lofty statements of condemnation are not enough; they are meaningless and hypocritical when Caribbean nations continue to maintain economic, diplomatic, sporting and cultural ties with the apartheid and genocidal state of Israel. As citizens of the Caribbean, we demand that all CARICOM nations cut all ties with Apartheid Israel, as was done with Apartheid South Africa.”
The group noted that religious leaders and others including Reverend Patricia Sheeratan Bisnauth, Sheikh Haseeb Yusuf, Nicole Cole of the Guyana Rastafari Council Group, and former president, Donald Ramotar are expected to be in attendance.
