$298M new primary school coming for St. Cuthbert’s Mission

(Kaieteur News) – The Amerindian community of St. Cuthbert’s Mission, also known as Pakuri Village, Region Four, is set to benefit from a $298.8 million state-of-the-art primary school, as Government moves to address overcrowding and improve learning conditions in the village.

The project which is being executed through the Ministry of Education is scheduled to begin within a week and has a duration of 12 months. The project will be executed by contractor MSR International Enterprise. According to information provided on the St. Cuthbert’s Mission/ Pakuri Village Council Facebook page recently, last year, at the National Toshaos Council Conference, representation was made for the extension of, or the construction of a new Primary School for their community, due to overcrowding at the existing facility.

“In August 2025, following a meeting with His Excellency, this matter was again raised, and a commitment was given for the construction of a new Primary School. Today (Wednesday), after consultations between the Village Council, teachers, and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), a site has been identified for the construction of a brand-new Primary School,” the Council announced.

The Village Council expressed that this marks an important step toward improving the learning environment for the children of the community and addressing the long-standing needs of its people.

In a recent interview with this publication, Toshao Alvoro Simon noted of the significant importance of the new building and how it will comfortably accommodate learners.

“Our numbers in the primary school is fairly going up and these are based on factors from persons wanting to come back in the village to live, they are moving back to the community. So the numbers at the school have constantly been on the rise, just over 120 students right now. The current space is jam packed right now,” he explained.

The new school building which will be located in the center of the village will be a two-storey structure and will feature several classrooms and new amenities like an IT lab which the current school does not have.

“Residents are pretty excited. It’s been a while that the kids have been under limited space and not just that, the weather condition in the village and the heat and the circulation is causing a lot of discomfort for teachers as well as students,” he informed. This publication had reported that the government in its 2026 budget has allocated a sum of $183.6 billion to support the education sector. Out of that amount, some $24.3 billion is earmarked to construct, rehabilitate and maintain school facilities across the country.
