Kaieteur News – One person attached to the New Timehri Handling Service is in custody following a 66-kilo cocaine bust at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The bust was made by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).
The unit’s director, James Singh told Kaieteur News, that “One individual with the handling company is in custody assisting with investigations”.
Kaieteur News learnt that the 66 kilos of cocaine were found just moments before cargo was about to be placed on a KLM flight destined for Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond praised CANU for making the bust. In a Facebook post, she said, “This is about more than an arrest — it’s about protecting our borders, safeguarding our people, and defending Guyana’s good name on the international stage”.
“Heartfelt thanks to our brave men and women in uniform whose tireless work keeps our nation safe and proud”, Minister Waldron added while stating that there will be more details to follow as the probe continues.
