St. Cuthbert’s Mission sees $1B upgrade to main access road

Kaieteur News – The government is spending just over $1 billion to upgrade the St. Cuthbert’s Mission main access road in Region Four.

This is according to Toshao Alvoro Simon, who in an interview with this publication on Tuesday, said the project has been one the main aspirations of residents.
The road he said, measures some 12 miles and is being upgraded from the Linden junction all the way to the center of the village. Works which started in the second week of August, he noted is currently some 95 per cent complete. It is hoped that the project will be fully complete time for the village’s heritage programme slated for September 27.
According to Simon, prior to the upgrade, residents faced several challenges with the previous loam surface of the road. He disclosed that not only the previous road had several potholes, but when there were heavy rainfalls, sections of the road would wash away.
He added that farmers would face difficulty in getting out their produce from the village.
He said the new road will bring about a host of benefits village has a huge tourism mandate.
“We have the destination to St. Cuthbert’s mandate to fulfill, we are trying to incorporate agro-tourism as well into the package. Besides that, transportation, have easier access for farmers to get their produce in and out of the village, that is for sure one and it would also encourage more tourist to come into our village,” he elaborated.
Commute for residents will also be easier and their village, which is known for hosting annual Heritage Day celebrations, Simon said the new road will provide smoother and faster access for visitors.
