Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand visiting the Haags Bosch Landfill located on the East Bank of Demerara.
Kaieteur News – Newly appointed Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand on Monday pledged to address the complaints raised about the foul odour and smoke emanating from the Haags Bosch Landfill located on the East Bank of Demerara.
The ministry in a release stated that they have received complaints from residents of the Providence and Eccles catchment areas about the odour coming from the dumpsite, which has been contributing to air pollution. Following the complaints, Minister convened a meeting with the Waste Solutions Manager, Operational Supervisor, and officials from the Ministry, during which she assured that the matter, will be addressed.
Manickchand visited the landfill area on Monday and in a video said that the odour and some are big concerns for many residents. She noted that the government’s plans is to have communities safe and looking and smelling good, but there are some issues that have to be dealt with. “I know the residents of Eccles and Prospect and Windsor have complained about the scent and smoke, and we’re trying to manage that. I’ve had a meeting with the engineers and the management of this landfill site,” she said.
According to the Minister some of the issues have been as a result of the development that’s happening in Guyana. “We’ve moved from 400 tons per day to 1200 tons per day. We’ve moved from about 100 trucks dumping here to three to 400 trucks dumping here. So we have to now increase our capacity of management.”
In addressing the issues, Manickchand said they are going to be looking at solid waste management in NDCs and in smaller villages, as well as in the large regions.
