(Kaieteur News) – Police are investigating reports of suspected Trafficking in Persons (TIP) activities following a joint exercise conducted between 22:15hrs on Saturday February 7, 2026 and 00:03hrs on Sunday February 8, 2026, at a building located on Charlotte and Albert Streets, Georgetown.
The exercise was carried out by ranks of the Trafficking in Persons Unit, Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, along with personnel from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (C-TIP Unit).
According to police press release, acting on information received, the team visited the building, where seventy-seven Cuban nationals, including men and women, were contacted and screened for indicators of Trafficking in Persons.
Several individuals reported that they travelled to Guyana under credit arrangements and that their travel documents were being retained pending repayment. These claims are forming part of the ongoing investigation. The individuals were handed over to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security for further assessment and assistance. The premises were searched; however, nothing illegal was found. No arrests were made. Investigations are ongoing.
